Mr. Elyに「ハヌカ」を教えてもらいました！

ハヌカは、光のお祭りとも呼ばれるユダヤ人の大切なイベントです。家族が集まって特別なごちそうを食べ、歌を歌って過ごします。子どもたちは小さな贈り物やお金、あるいはコインの形をしたチョコレートをもらいます。

ユダヤ人の信仰を禁じたシリア王に対し、マカベア戦争でユダヤ人が勝利したことを記念したのがきっかけで、ユダヤ人たちは奪回した神殿に永遠の火を再びともそうとしましたが、それに必要な神聖な油は一晩分しかありませんでした。ところが奇跡的にその神聖な油は8日間、火をともし続けたのです。

今日ユダヤ人は、ろうそくを立てる枝が八つ付いた特別な燭台（メノラー）を用い、ハヌカの8日間にわたって毎日一本ずつ点火するロウソクの数を増やしながら、この奇跡をお祝いします。また油が絶えなかったことにちなんで、ドーナツなどの揚げ物を食べます。

Hanukkah is the Jewish eight-day, wintertime “festival of lights,” celebrated with a nightly menorah lighting, special prayers and fried foods.

The holiday commemorates the triumph of a band of rebel Jews (known as the Maccabees) in reclaiming the Temple in Jerusalem from the Greek-Syrians. After the Maccabee victory, the Jews cleansed and rededicated the temple. They required a holy light to burn inside at all times, but they had only enough oil for one night. Incredibly, the light burned for eight days.

Today the Jews light the menorah for the eight days of Hanukkah to commemorate the miracle.
